andriasang reports that in a Q & A discussion last week, game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto talked with investors about Mario games for the 3DS.

Miyamoto explained that the 3D visual effects give players the feeling of involvement with more freedom and choice. He also added, “When asked ‘what will we do on 3DS,’ the answer is, of course, we’ll make both. They both have their own appeal. The 3DS’s 3D effect also “gives a great feeling of existence to Mario, Link and others.

He also pointed out that depth-based effects can already be seen in 2D Mario games, such as Wiggler, and Bullet Bill and he commented, “It’s difficult to tell when they will hit the player, so we were only able to use these lightly. However, we’ll be able to use this type of thing quite a bit on the 3DS.”

Electronic Theatre spent some time with the Mario Kart tech demo at the recent UK unveiling of the 3DS. They seemed to get a good sense of how racing games would benefit from the 3D space, and thought it would actually have a dramatic effect on the gameplay mechanics.

They’re predicting a possible release around next summer, and I’d have to agree that we won’t be seeing this game at launch.

Mario Kart for Nintendo 3DS

ONM has posted some impressions up on Mario Kart 3DS. The game has only made the rounds in video demo form so far, so we’ll have to wait to hear how it plays. But since 3D is obviously the game’s big attraction this time around, it’s definitely great to hear that it’s looking good on that front.

Here’s a snippet:

“It looks great and is perhaps the first game in the series that has blown me away visually.”

Mario Kart 3DS

Here is a YouTube video posted by Nintendo World Report that shows a bit of off-camera footage from E3 where we can see some gameplay from 3DS games Paper Mario and Mario Kart. While it’s unfortunate the 3D effects can’t be seen without actually having the unit in your hands, the video still shows off some pretty visuals from the games as well as giving us a look at the widescreen format of the unit’s top screen.

Here’s a short YouTube video that summarizes what we know about Mario Kart 3DS at this point. There’s not much known quite yet, so you may have to use your imagination a little!
