A big problem Nintendo has faced over the years is the piracy of games for their various platforms. Worst hit was the Nintendo DS, where today piracy is rampant thanks to things such as the infamous R4 card. With the 3DS, Nintendo is hoping to curb piracy by introducing new methods to thwart the pirates.

During a Q&A with investors, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata talked about implementing firmware updates as one of those methods.  It’s possible they will either be automatically downloaded via SpotPass or packaged along with games.
Regardless of the distribution method, regular firmware updates will go a long  way towards preventing piracy on the 3DS. I have a feeling that won’t be the only new method used either.
