Nintendo 3DS

By now most people interested in the Nintendo 3DS have heard that it will carry a price tag of ¥25,000 when it goes on sale in Japan. A poll on with results from over 1,000 people suggests that most think that the 3DS is on the expensive side of the spectrum.

Here are the poll results:

  • Slightly Expensive: 32.2 percent (323 replies)
  • Expensive: 28.3 percent (284 replies)
  • Too Expensive: 19.2 percent (192 replies)
  • Reasonable: 16.4 percent (164 replies)
  • Slightly Inexpensive: 2 percent (20 replies)
  • Inexpensive: 0.9 percent (9 replies)

You can see by these results that very few people consider the 3DS to be a reasonably priced purchase, with but a fraction that think it’s inexpensive. A whopping 80% of responses fell in the slightly expensive to too expensive range. Some noted comments seemed to also fall on the negative side of things, with some saying that the specs did not merit the price tag. Others said things such as:

“I’m hesitant to buy it on launch day”
“That’s not the price-tag of a child’s toy.”

Could these results indicate that the 3DS won’t be a breakout hit when it launches? Hardware pricing is key to a successful launch, and I’m sure Nintendo has given a lot of thought to their price point. Will it miss the mark, or will people be unable to resist all that the Nintendo 3DS has to offer?
